The first shamanic drum I made was from a deer skin. During the birthing process I was invited to connect to the spirit of the deer, to learn what the deer had to teach me, and to ask permission to use the skin for the purpose of crafting a shamanic drum.
During this journey, I saw a deer, stood majestic on the side of a hill, glancing over to me. As this deer stood still in my minds eye, overlaying this image, I experienced feelings of such joy, freedom and belonging. Feelings of humble wisdom and gentle grace; together with an understanding of permission, like an energetic bow. These journeys are like energy transmissions that can take time to assimilate and translate in full, or as fully as you are able. But in that moment, the influx of pure life force energy in the form of deer medicine brought tears to my eyes and expanded my heart. Even now, years later, I am deeply moved by the memory of it. By the gracious gift that deer offered me, and the life shown to me that had been experienced, has stayed with me.
Deer medicine symbolism reminds us to be gracious and composed. The direct gaze of a deer is clear, confident and sure of foot. There is an understanding of place, and the cycles of life, of family. Deer are also powerful and majestic. Reminding us to stand up for who we are without aggression. To stop, assess and take time to recognise where we have been, where we are at, and with careful consideration, where we are headed.
Highly intuitive, deer symbolism is often seen to represent spiritual authority. Stags, as leaders of the forest. Deer have highly developed sense's of sound and movement. They stop, glance, sense, then move. They show us to use our senses, trust our intuition, act accordingly.
With their incredible antlers reaching up towards the sky, like antenna or radars, deer's represent alertness, self-reliance, and protection. Their hooves sure and strong, the deer medicine is grounding whilst keeping us in higher frequency flow. Aligned with both earth and cosmic intelligence. Inviting us to call in our higher selves.
Working with deer skin is a humbling experience every time. I am so filled with gratitude to have their permission to work in this way, and to support the arrival of new shamanic drum souls. Shamanic drums, powerful sacred healing tools full of wisdom.
